Round 1
What one guess costs an attacker
Zen Passwords
Argon2id from the start, with no menu to find. New vaults work out what your phone can afford. They start at 256 MB of memory per guess and step down through 128 and 64, keeping the strongest setting that still unlocks in under a second.
Proton Pass
Proton's own security model describes encrypting the user key with a bcrypt hash of the key password and the account salt, with a hardened Secure Remote Password exchange for signing in. bcrypt is a respected password hashing function, and it uses a fixed and very small amount of memory compared with Argon2id.
Zen Passwords. Zen Passwords. This is the round we are proudest of and the reason to choose us over a product that beats us elsewhere. bcrypt was designed in 1999 and it is not broken, but it was never built to make a cracking rig run out of memory. Argon2id was.
